Project's Details

ADA Tech Students Connect is an ADA Technology project designed to supplement the core curriculum and after-school programs for disabled wheelchair-bound students in the Lowell public school system. These students are now receiving only part-time schooling. The project seeks to expand their schooling by increasing their access to and use of information technology.

The project's intent is to empower severely disabled students to use computers and the Internet by bringing them a special web Network environment adapted to their disabilities and needs. The Network will be adapted by using advanced technologies, tools, and ADA Technology's own innovations. See more about technology.

The project wants to connect all local severely disabled students into the ADA Tech learning web Network where they will be able to freely communicate with peers and teachers and to study online. The students will use a variety of learning materials, delivered to them through the Network, in digital forms fully accessible for them, and adjustable to their needs and wishes.

Under the project, ADA Tech learning web Network will:
  • connect severely disabled students to their peers, teachers and others who help and work with them
  • provide students with a computer that has adaptive technologies suited to their disabilities
  • supply students with fully accessible interfaces to access and use the Internet
  • provide teachers with tools to digitize their learning material, organize, and update it on an ADA Tech server
  • distribute fully accessible multimedia courses and learning-related materials to the students at their request, adjusted to their disabilities and needs
  • allow students to use the material online or download it for using off-line
  • provide students with training in computer and Internet skills
  • teach students and their parents, teachers, doctors, etc. how to use ADA Tech Network

The pilot program

ADA Technology proposes to start its project with a pilot program that will serve a small group of Lowell high school students. There are five severely disabled wheelchair-bound students in Lowell High School. These students are only receiving a part-time education, provided mostly by doctors at their home or school. Their school room is equipped with two computers, but, in addition to physical difficulties that limit access these computers, the students have difficulties using the equipment because of its non-accessible interfaces. In cases where students manage to do use computers, they cannot get educational material online because the school does not have digital courses and online learning material accessible for these disabled students.

Under the pilot project, ADA Technology will:
  • provide these severely disabled students with wheelchair-attachable computers and assistive technology to use the computers and the Internet
  • adjust the equipment to the use of the severely disabled students on and off-line
  • give the disabled students a constant Internet connection
  • provide severely disabled students with fully accessible web applications and interfaces for communicating and doing different activities online
  • provide severely disabled students with accessible courses and learning/training material to work with on and off-line
In the process of serving this particular group of students, ADA Technology will:
  • test stability, security, and effectiveness of the ADA Tech. Network as a whole as well as the accessibility of interfaces and applications as parts of the system
  • communicate with teachers, special education professionals, doctors, and parents to build learning, informational and training material most appropriate for the students
  • experiment with different tools and technologies to find the most effective way for building a highly universal network that can be used on different platforms and can be easily expanded and replicated.

Other disabled students from local public schools will be added to the ADA Tech learning web Network after successful implementation of the Network for the pilot group of students.

Computer and Internet technologies adapted to the needs of severely disabled students can work miracles. It is the intent of ADA Tech. Students Connect to make this miracle come true, to turn the disabilities of these students upside-down and to focus on enhancing abilities!
