ABOUT US
ADA Tech Schools Assistance project supplements limited community and schools resources for severely disabled students. The project empowers students by bringing them access to computers and the Internet. It dramatically boosts the abilities of these children to communicate and learn. The organization focuses on helping severely disabled wheelchair-bound students; the sector of the disabled community that is most underserved and most in need of technology. The situation for such students in the local community is alarming. ADA Technology seeks to enhance the schooling of disabled students with severe motor disabilities from Lowell and Lawrence public schools and to duplicate results and project project's deliverables for other severely disabled students. The organization is starting by helping individual students at local public middle schools. The organization is working toward adapting technology to individual needs of each disabled student. Currently, such students can use computers on very limited scale and often cannot use them at all because these computers are not adjusted to their disabilities. When using computers, the students encounter a variety of barriers brought by limited accessibility of computers software and Internet applications. ADA Technology is attempting to upgrade computers, enhance them with innovative accessibility equipment and install accessible software tools and learning packages. The organization seeks to train students and teachers as well as students' parents and helpers on how to use and benefit from these improvements. The training is conducted through workshops and on-to-one sessions. ADA Technology is developing a Fully Accessible Learning Network. This is a local web network for connecting severely disabled students with teachers and each other. It distributes learning materials in fully accessible electronic forms. Individual computers and terminals will be connected to this network with the goal to connect all disabled students locally and expand the network for students from other communities including colleges and universities. See more about Fully Accessible Learning Network. The vision of the organization is that Information Technology accessibility for severely disabled students is a community affair, not merely a matter for one particular school, organization, or family. ADA Technology believes in joining community desires with intellectual and financial resources. The organization's goal is to become a frontier for equal access to Information Technology for severely disabled students locally and a model for other communities nationwide.
